Tribute for Henry “Hank” Aaron

Hank Aaron 1934-2021

Today, the world lost a legend and a hero.

We are profoundly heartbroken by the passing of our dear friend Henry “Hank” Aaron. A baseball icon, generous soul, and consummate gentleman, he brought out the best in everyone he encountered. His incredible wife Billye and the Aaron family are very much in the thoughts and prayers of all of us at the Jackie Robinson Foundation at this most difficult time.

Universally respected throughout the country and the game that he loved, Hank often spoke laudably about his friend Jackie Robinson and the impact Jackie had on his life both on and off the field. In addition to his well-known athletic skill and talent, Hank exuded strong character and unshakable integrity. He led by example and encouraged and paved the way for countless others not only in baseball but throughout professional sports, setting an example as well for how to live a righteous life.

Rachel and Sharon Robinson share their condolences, “My mother and I were heartbroken by news of Henry “Hank” Aaron’s passing. While Hank Aaron’s greatness on the field will forever be celebrated, we should not forget that Hank was a fierce champion for racial justice. He was also a kind and generous soul who cherished privacy, family, and friendship. Our love goes out to Billye and the Aaron family.”

Jackie Robinson Foundation longtime chairman and current board member Leonard Coleman said it best: “Our Lord saved the best mold for my dear friend Hank Aaron – a warrior for justice yet a truly principled prince of peace.”
