In Memoriam: James Earl Carter, Jr.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of our country’s 39th president, Jimmy Carter, the longest-lived president in our history and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, who passed away on December 29th at 100 years old. In the words of the former president’s son, Chip Carter, Jimmy Carter stood for “peace, human rights, and unselfish love.” Working to promote those values, in 1982, a year after he left office, Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter, in partnership with Emory University, founded The Carter Center.

The Carter Center, a not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization, has helped to improve life for people in over 80 countries by resolving conflicts; advancing democracy, human rights, and economic opportunity; preventing diseases; and improving mental health care.
