With deep sadness, we acknowledge the loss of legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson, Jr. An enduring reflection of the best of collegiate coaching, the Hall of Fame leader shaped the lives of thousands of players throughout a career that spanned nearly half a century. His resounding achievements as a coach were matched by his pivotal role in his players’ exceptional academic success over the years – a 97% graduation rate. His compassionate approach cultivated more than just an athlete’s on-court talent. He served as the “North Star” for so many—bestowing principles that would enhance their quality of life in sports and beyond.
As the nation witnesses a surge in athletes leveraging their platforms in the fight for social justice, we reflect also on Mr. Thompson’s legacy of providing a safe place for young men to find their voice. For him, it was bigger than the game. He sprinkled wisdom and encouragement to help future leaders find their paths, leaving no doubt in their minds that they mattered. We extend our deepest condolences to the Thompson family in coping with this profound loss. May he rest in peace.
